Most models in the growing Mercedes-Benz SUV range can be found with a ‘G’ badge on their rump, but one Merc has long been doing its own thing.

That could be about to change, however, with new reports this week suggesting that the Mercedes M-Class will soon be known as the GLE-Class.

The report, with America’s Car & Driver, adds credence to whispers in recent years that Mercedes would soon unify all of its SUV and high-riding 4WD models under the ‘G’ moniker.

The GLE range would join the giant GL-Class, the rugged and retro-styled G-Class, the midsized GLK not yet available in Australia and the compact GLA that launched earlier this year.

As for the ‘E’ in the new name, Car & Driver reports that this is a reference to the similarly sized E-Class range - just as the ‘A’ in GLA points to the A-Class with which the compact SUV shares its platform.
