Mercedes-Benz’s quest to put a model into almost every vehicle class imaginable has led the carmaker to fill a gap in its SUV line-up.

While the switch from former model monikers to the new ‘GL’ range is now complete, Benz will soon introduce a new variant called the GLC Coupe.

The carmaker has confirmed that the new model will make its first appearance at the New York Auto Show, while teasing the Coupe in a short video (bottom of page).

As with the larger GLE Coupe, and the X4 from rival BMW, the new model takes a swooping four-door coupe body and plants it on the regular GLC’s SUV platform.

Naturally, the platform isn’t all the pair will share, with most (if not all) of the GLC’s powertrain options likely to be offered with the Coupe version.

In Australia, that would mean a 2.1 litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine making either 125kW/400Nm or 150kW/500Nm, or a 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine making 155kW/350Nm.

Pricing for the 2016 GLC class kicks off at $64,500 for the 220d variant, rounding out at $69,990 for the 250d - plus on-road costs.

Mercedes is yet to confirm whether we’ll see the GLC Coupe in Australia or not, but expect a price premium over the regular model similar to the GLE Coupe, if and when it does arrive.

One could argue the availability of both the GLE Coupe and rival BMW X4 locally makes the GLC Coupe a better-than-average chance of arriving in Australian showrooms.
