Mercedes-Benz never stops looking for another crevice to fill in the world’s car markets, and one of the German carmaker’s next must-have models is the compact GLB SUV.
Joining the GLA, GLC, GLE and GLS SUVs, the GLB (codenamed ‘X247’) will reportedly step outside the Benz box with styling more akin to the rugged G-Class off-roader - if it were shrunk in the carwash.
The UK’s Autocar reports that Mercedes is looking to capitalise on the sales-momentum currently enjoyed by most carmakers churning out compact SUVs.
In Australia, however, the small SUV market under forty grand is actually down 9.2 percent to the end of February, and in the same market over $40,000, it’s down 7.7 percent.
Audi’s Q2 is unlike any other Audi model currently on sale, with the carmaker making no secret of its desire to tap into a younger audience through edgier styling and interior technology.
Benz now, it seems, has the same plans for its GLB-Class, with ‘mini-4WD heritage truck’ looks and a host of styling packages for customers to maximise individuality.
Buyers will also be able to opt for an increased ride-height, although it’s unlikely that many GLBs will ever venture far from the tarmac. Further choices include a seven-seat layout, while both powered-up AMG versions and plug-in hybrid powerplants could also be on the options list.
The GLB, a name Mercedes has already trademarked, would likely nestle between the GLA and GLC in the market price-wise, and the new model is expected to makes its overseas debut in 2019. Stay tuned for more.
