Mercedes says its 2.0 litre engine is the "world’s most muscular four-cylinder production engine" and the GLA 45 naturally features AMG’s version of the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system.
The three-pointed star remains cagey with its performance and fuel figures, however, revealing only that the GLA 45 AMG can cover the 0-100km/h run in "under five seconds" and that the fuel figure has ‘a ‘7’ in front of the comma’.
Elsewhere, the concept wears 21-inch matt black alloy wheels housing AMG high-performance brakes with red callipers, while a distinctive rear wing dominates exterior styling.
"With the GLA 45 AMG Concept, we are setting a stake firmly in the ground of the strongly growing market segment of compact SUVs,” Mercedes-Benz AMG’s Tobias Moers said.
“Our customers – a young target group who set great store by styling, dynamism and independence – can now start looking forward to a dynamic high-performance car."
The Mercedes-Benz GLA 45 AMG is likely to make its global production debut early in 2014, with a local arrival expected sometime in the second half of next year.
