Mercedes-Benz has entered the emerging energy storage space with a new arm of the company simply called Mercedes-Benz Energy.

Customers in the UK will be among the first to be offered the new technology, which uses lithium-ion batteries in up to eight battery modules of 2.5kWh each.

Combined, the Energy unit has a capacity of up to 20kWh, and Benz says industrialised versions can achieve even greater ratings.

The technology is the same as that used by parent company Daimler in Mercedes-Benz hybrid, electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, with more than 80,000 built by the company since 2012. It’s also a competitor to Tesla’s Powerwall, which uses similar technology.

The system is ideally matched with the likes of solar or wind-sourced power, and Mercedes says average households can use the storage to power up to 65 percent of energy requirements.
