Revealed in concept form in 2010 and confirmed for production just months later, the CLS Shooting Brake has also been spied testing in light camouflage over the past year.
Similar to to the sedan, Mercedes describes the CLS Shooting Brake as a coupe, "but with five doors and a roof which continues through to the rear". (TMR Managing Editor Tim O'Brien delivered a sermon on shooting brakes in May.)
Measuring 4956mm long, Merc's coupe-esque new wagon is just 16mm longer than the sedan.
Despite its sleek roofline, the CLS Shooting Brake promises 590 litres of rear storage with the back seats upright, bettering the XF Sportbrake, the 5 Series Touring and Audi's A6 Avant. Only its E-Class stablemate, with 695 litres, will swallow more.
Standout features of the CLS Shooting Brake include the extensive use of aluminium. It's used in the frameless doors, tailgate, bonnet, front guards, and extensively for engine and suspension components.
There are LED headlights, and Merc's Intelligent Light System - previously the domain of models with xenon headlights - is also featured.
Internationally, the CLS Shooting Brake will launch with four engines, from an entry-level diesel through to a petrol V8-powered flagship.
The range will kick off with the CLS 250 CDI, powered by a 2.1 litre four-cylinder turbodiesel, producing 150kW and 500Nm of torque. Fuel consumption is listed at 5.3 l/100km, and the 0-100km/h time at 7.8 seconds.
The second diesel in the line-up will be the CLS 350 CDI, driven by the larger 3.0 litre V6 that develops 195kW and 620Nm.
Fuel use is listed at 6.0 l/100km in rear-wheel-drive form, and 6.6 l/100km with the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. It lists 6.6 and 6.7 0-100km/h times.
The CLS 350 will open the petrol line, its 3.5 litre V6 developing 225kW and 370Nm. Fuel use is listed at 7.3 l/100km, and the 0-100km/h sprint at 6.7 seconds.
Sitting at the top end will be the CLS 500, powered by Merc's 4.6 litre V8 engine that delivers 300kW and 600Nm. This model returns a very reasonable 9.2 l/100km for the RWD, and 9.8 l/100km for the 4Matic AWD. Both versions list a 0-100km/h time of 5.3 seconds.
All four engines are paired with Mercedes' familiar seven-speed 7G tronic Plus dual-clutch automatic trasmission, and each features an ECO start/stop system.
Next year, Mercedes-Benz will fill out the range with one final model: the CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake, which will likely feature the same 386kW/700Nm 5.5 litre bi-turbo V8 that drives its sedan counterpart.
The CLS Shooting Brake range will hit Australia in November or December this year.
Speaking with TMR today, Mercedes-Benz Australia Senior Manager for Corporate Communications, David McCarthy, said that local engines and specifications are still to be decided.
"We'll definitely get the AMG model when it's available, but we're working through all of the details now," Mr McCarthy said.
