Mercedes-Benz has pulled the wraps from its brand-new CLA sedan in Detroit today, ahead of its late 2013 Australian debut.
Teased by the Style Coupe concept that debuted last year, revealing spy photos and leaked images in recent months have left Mercedes with few surprises.
Revealed here in CLA 250 form, the new four-door coupe range will begin with the 90kW CLA 180 model, moving through to the CLA 200, 250, 220 CDI diesel and, later in the year, the CLA 45 AMG.
In the 250, power is provided by the same 155kW and 350Nm 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine powering its five-door platform mate, the A 250 hatch.
The theme of sharing continues with the CLA 45 AMG, which will draw power from the A 45 AMG hatch's turbo mill producing upwards of 245kW and 400Nm.
The CLA 45 AMG will also get the same 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system bound for the hatch, mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Although technically an entry-level offering at the small-car end of the Mercedes line-up, the CLA's proportions aren't far off the 'larger' C-Class model.
Measuring 4630mm long, the CLA is 38mm longer than the C-Class - although much of that is overhang, with the new model sitting on a wheelbase 61mm shorter than in the midsizer.
Sharing Mercedes' MFA platform with th A-Class means the CLA also shares the bulk of the hatch's components, right down to the design of the sedan's cabin.
Inside, the CLA brings a new level of mobile technology integration for the Mercedes brand, including advanced iPhone connectivity through its new "Digital DriveStyle" app and the optional "Drive Kit Plus for the Apple iPhone" package.
Driver-aid and safety features include Attention Assist, Brake Hold, Hill-Start Assist, Distronic Plus, Adaptive Highbeam Assist, Blind Spot and Lane Keeping Assist, Active Parking Assist, Linguatronic and Reversing Camera.
Watch for Australian details on the CLA range as it nears its local debut later this year.
