Mercedes-Benz has roped in actor Richard Dean Anderson to reprise his role as iconic 80s problem-solver MacGyver, in a new promotional bit for the upcoming Citan city van.

Teased with a new trailer released this week ahead of its September 18 launch, the three-episode web series sees MacGyver yanked out of his new life as a handyman, forced to take on a gang of would-be terrorists.

Of course, Mac will have the usual assortment of Swiss Army knives, paperclips and orange peels at his disposal... along with the Mercedes-Benz Citan.

Developed together with partner Renault, the Citan is built on the same platform underpinning the Kangoo van, but gets its own front- and rear-end styling, a new dash, and a trio of Mercedes engines.

Engine options will include three Mercedes-Benz direct-injected turbodiesel mills, with outputs rated at 55kW, 81kW and 84kW.

The Citan is expected to hit Australia in early 2013, with an official unveiling scheduled for September's IAA Commercial Vehicle Show.

In Australia, the Citan will face off against segment leader the Volkswagen Caddy, along with the Holden Combo, Suzuki APV and Renault's own Kangoo.
