Mercedes Benz’ new 1.6 litre turbocharged petrol four cylinder engine will soon find its way into the C-Class for European markets, forming a new entry-level C180 model.

Branded internally as M274, the engine recently hit the Australian market in transverse form (M270) under the bonnet of the new B-Class petrol models, in both 90kw and 115kW spec levels.

The engine is also expected to feature in the upcoming A-Class hatchback range.

Mercedes’ German website already lists specifications for the new model, which is available with either six-speed manual, or 7G-TRONIC PLUS seven-speed automatic transmissions.

According to Mercedes, the smaller engine delivers fuel consumption approximately 10 percent better than the 1.8 litre turbocharged engine found in Australia’s current base C 200 model, which has an official local combined figure of 6.8 l/100km.

It is unclear at this stage whether Australia will see the new engine in local C-Class models, which could potentially form a new entry level model for the mid-size range.
