Mercedes' C-Class midsizer will soon welcome a topless model to the family, a new report out of the US suggests.

The current C-Class line-up, updated late in 2010, includes the familiar sedan and Estate wagon styles, along with the more recently launched Coupe body.

According to American paper USA Today, Mercedes-Benz USA boss Steve Cannon has confirmed plans for a new Convertible variant.

In an interview this week, Cannon said that the decision to peel back the C-Class Coupe's roof came out of a push to draw in more 'Gen Y' buyers.

"We're a brand [that] we think can absolutely connect with them," Cannon told the paper. "Gen Y is just coming of age. We get on their radar screen in a big way."

For now, the most affordable droptop in Merc's Australian line-up is the SLK 200, a dedicated roadster, at $82,900. With the C-Class Coupe starting at $58,900, a convertible version would likely enter below the SLK's price.
