Mercedes-Benz will show a new electric-blue and electrified version of its B-Class small car in Paris this month, ahead of a 2014 production debut.

The new concept is the first Mercedes model to wear the Electric Drive branding, with stablemate Smart already offering a ForTwo Electric Drive model.

Power for the Concept B-Class Electric Drive is provided an electric motor that produces 100kW and 310Nm of torque. These figures fall short of the petrol-powered B200's 115kW output, but bettering its 250Nm of torque.

Mercedes promises a driving range of around 200km, making it both more powerful and further driving than the 80kW/160Km Nissan Leaf already available in Australia.

The design of the concept sees the electric motor's lithium-ion battery pack storaged in the floor space forward of the rear axle.

This design helps to maintain interior space, made simpler because of a focus on electric vehicle plans during the development of the platform underpinning the B-Class.

The B-Class Electric Drive is expected to be the first of a range of electrified models in the Mercedes passenger range, joining the ultra-exclusive SLS AMG E-Cell in the coming years.
