AMG began as a part-time operation in the 1960s, with founders Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher working on customer projects in their spare time.
The pair’s surname initials make up the ‘A’ and ‘M’ in AMG, with the ‘G’ representing Aurfrecht’s home-town of Großaspach.
AMG first came to the attention of the three-pointed star when its 6.8 litre V8 Mercedes sedan won the 24 Hours of Spa at the famous Belgian circuit in 1971.
It took another 17 years, however, before Mercedes hired the AMG group to run its racing operations in 1988.
Eleven years later, Mercedes bought a controlling interest in AMG and has used the company as its in-house performance division ever since.
