Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that its new top-shelf A-Class performance hatch will be known as the A 45 AMG, named to celebrate 45 years of AMG tuning.
Destined for its global debut in early 2013, AMG's smallest new model will be powered by a turbocharged 2.0 litre engine, producing "significantly above" 400Nm of torque.
A power figure has yet to be revealed, although it is expected that the A 45 AMG will produce upwards of 245kW.
With those figures, the A 45 AMG will go head-to-head with Audi's 250kW all-wheel-drive RS 3 hatch, and BMW's new rear-wheel-drive 235kW M135i.
Mercedes has confirmed the engine - a version of the turbo mill in the new A 250 - will be matched to an all-wheel-drive system and its AMG Speedshift dual-clutch seven-speed transmission.
AMG sports suspension will feature, including independently developed front and rear axles with MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link arrangement at the rear.
There will also be electromechanical speed-sensitive steering, AMG high-performance brakes and a three-stage ESP system with Sport Handling mode.
Watch for more details on the A 45 AMG to arrive in the lead-up to its early 2013 launch.
