The ‘AMG Sport’ badge will soon stand for a whole lot more than mean styling and a touch of tuned handling, with news this week that Mercedes-AMG is ready to launch a range of Audi S and BMW M Performance rivals.

Until now, Mercedes buyers hungry for performance have had the option of a sports styled and suspension-tuned version of the regular models, or a full-bottle AMG model.

This latest move means that buyers will now have a third option, right smack in the middle of, say, the ‘regular’ C 400 and the hero Mercedes-AMG C 63.

That particular suggestion won’t surprise many fans, with reports already doing the rounds earlier this year that Mercedes-AMG has been preparing a special ‘Mercedes-AMG C 450 Sport’.

As a rival to Audi’s S4 (whereas the C 63 stares down the RS 4), the AMG C 450 Sport is expected to draw power from a 270kW version of Merc’s twin-turbo M276 3.0 litre V6 engine.

And like the S4, the new AMG Sport models are expected to be an exclusively all-wheel-drive proposition.

We can likely expect the Mercedes-AMG Sport badge to proliferate across the wider range, from the small A-Class through to the large E-Class and the full spread of SUV models - especially the coming new GLE Coupe, teased above.
