Mercedes-Benz continues its roll out of potent AMG-tuned models, adding two new V8-powered SUVs to its range with the GLC 63 and GLC 63 Coupe.
The Mercedes-AMG GLC twins hold the distinct privilege of being the world’s first eight-cylinder medium SUVs bringing a unique selling point compared to similar six-cylinder performance SUVs from Porsche, Audi, Jaguar and BMW.
The engine itself is that same as deployed in the Mercedes-AMG C 63, with a 4.0-litre twin-turbo design churning out 350kW and 650Nm in its ‘standard’ trim or a more potent 375kW and 700Nm in the GLC 63 S.
Those numbers put the GLC 63 models well ahead of the turbo V6 GLC 43 models that offer a more sedate (but hardly unremarkable) 270kw and 520Nm and allow the V8 hero models to dash from 0-100 km/h in 4.0 seconds or an even more scandalous 3.8 seconds for the GLC 63 S.
Both regular SUV and five-door coupe models will be offered with unmissable styling changes including AMG’s new vertical-slatted ‘Panamericana’ grille up front, a deep front splitter, new side sills, quad-tipped exhausts set into a redesigned rear bumper and a rooftop spoiler on the wagon or a real lip spoiler for the GLC 63 Coupe.
The engine is backed by AMG’s Speedshift multi-clutch nine-speed automatic transmission with standard intelligent variable all-wheel drive and either a mechanical limited slip rear differential on GLC 63 model or an electronic limited slip rear differential for GLC 63 S variants.
AMG-specific air suspension provides enhanced roadholding, with a rear axle and suspension system adapted from the Mercedes-AMG E 63 providing a wider track and altered geometry. Wheels from 19-inches to 21-inches are also available.
Mercedes’ in-house tuning arm has also touched upon the steering, exhaust, brakes, and Dynamic Select drive modes as well as upgrading the interior with a more sporting design, deeply bolstered sports seats, Artico ‘man made’ leather and microfibre trim, and in the GLC 63 S, a Nappa leather and microfibre Performance steering wheel.
The GLC 63 range will make its public debut at the New York Auto Show next week, headlined by an Edition 1 package that adds unique styling touches inside and out to highlight the new performance SUV’s dynamic styling.
