The inevitable topless version of the Mercedes-AMG GT may be with us earlier than first expected, with reports out of Europe pointing to an arrival in showrooms as early as next year.

Speaking with the UK’s Auto Express, AMG boss Tobias Moers reportedly confirmed a 2017 debut for the GT Roadster, taking the opportunity to assure fans it would not be a watered-down version of the GT hardtop.

“The convertible has moved well beyond the drawing board,” Moers said.

“It will be the next AMG GT model to arrive.”

The news of a GT Roadster follows the unveiling of the new hard-core GT R model, and Moers said an as-yet unknown fourth GT model is also on the way.

Reports from Europe claim AMG fans have already spotted GT Roadsters undergoing road testing, and an official unveiling may happen before the end of this year.
