The flagship offering in the new Mercedes-Benz GLA compact SUV range is now here, the $79,900 GLA 45 AMG.

Joining the carmaker’s growing range of small high-performance models, the Mercedes-AMG GLA 45 completes a trifecta that includes the A 45 hatch and CLA 45 sedan.

This AMG model also rounds out the new GLA range, which opened in April with the GLA 200 CDI priced from $47,900, followed later by the $57,990 GLA 250.

The GLA 45 AMG’s pricing was also announced back in April, revealing a $22,430 premium over the GLA 250, but its local debut had been delayed until recent weeks.

As with its A and CLA cousins, the GLA 45 is driven by a 265kW/450Nm turbo 2.0 litre four-cylinder petrol engine, sending power to the 4matic all-wheel-drive system through a seven-speed dual-clutch auto.

AMG promises a 0-100km/h time of 4.8 seconds, making the compact SUV just 0.2 seconds slower than the punchy little A 45.

Top speed is listed at an electronically limited 250km/h, and fuel consumption is rated at 7.6 l/100km - a fair leap beyond the A 45’s 6.9 l/100km figures.

But, for a model that weighs in at 1585kg and measures a full 125mm longer, 61mm taller and 24mm wider than the A 45, the GLA’s performance and fuel numbers are well inside the bounds of reason.

Being a performance hero model, the GLA 45 sits lower on AMG-specific sports suspension, adding stiffer knuckles and springs for a sharpened and firmer ride.

The small performance SUV can also be optioned track-focused suspension for a further $1990, along with a spoiler and splitter package for another $1990.

Braking is managed by big 350mm discs and four-piston callipers at the front, matched to 330mm discs at the rear. All four corners are vented, cross-drilled and grooved.

Beyond the 155kW GLA 250, the GLA 45 AMG also gets 20-inch alloys, darker exterior accents, advanced satellite navigation and a premium surround-sound audio system.

Other standard kit for the GLA 45 includes Recaro-developed AMG Performance seats, leather and suede trim with red contrast stitching, a seven-inch colour touch display, an AMG instrument cluster with race timer, DAB+ digital radio, brushed steel pedals and a leather-wrapped dash.
