Mercedes-AMG has given its Formula One-based hypercar project an official working title, Project One, signifying the close ties between the companies on track efforts and the take-home version.

The performance arm of Mercedes-Benz has also gone official with some of the first details of the engineering masterwork, confirming that it will provide a combined total power output in excess of 735kW, putting that power to the ground via all wheel drive.

The term “combined” stems from Project One’s hybrid powertrain, with a “purely electric and wheel selective” driven front axle joining a derivative of the 1.6 litre turbocharged V6 engine that will power the W08 AMG Petronas Formula One car, to be unveiled in February.

Unlike the F1 car however, no FIA restrictions will apply to the roadgoing version meaning Project One’s engine could potentially outgun its circa 450kW F1 counterpart by bypassing fuel flow and fuel pressure restrictions.

The remainder of Project One’s extra urge will come from its hybrid system, adding all wheel drive to F1’s rear wheel drive only layout and giving the hypercar the ability to travel up to 25 kilometres emissions free.

Other Project One details, including the car’s official release title, acceleration figures, and final pricing are still closely guarded internal secrets, but with AMG celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2017 more details are expected to be teased as the year goes on.
