If your daily commute includes the Glen Waverley section of Victoria's Springvale Road, it might be time to consider an alternative route.
Recent AAMI claims data has highlighted this stretch of road as the site of more car accidents in the last 12 months than any other in the country.
That statistic is joined by four other accident hot spots listed this week by the insurer for both Sydney and Melbourne, forming part of the forthcoming 2012 AAMI Crash Index.
The data has been compiled from nearly 275,000 national accident claims between June 2011 and 2012.
Sydney’s worst spots include the Liverpool stretch of the Hume Highway, followed by Pennant Hills Road, the Rockdale section of the Princes Highway, the M4 Motorway near Silverwater, and the Macquarie Park end of Epping Road.
In Melbourne, Springvale Road is followed by Plenty Road in Bundoora, Bell Street in Preston, the Dandenong section of the Princes Highway, and the Coburg stretch of Sydney Road.
According to AAMI spokesperson Reuben Aitchison, the highlighted locations are all high-traffic areas, and generally experience two accidents each day.
“A moment’s lapse in concentration or judgement or letting your impatience get the better of you can easily lead to a crash. Best case scenario you have a fender bender, but unfortunately we also see far worse”, Mr Aitchison said.
A related survey of 3706 AAMI members saw 45 percent of respondents place the blame for accidents on other road users, and 29 percent on their own carelessness.
