McLaren has confirmed that its upcoming entry-level model -previously referred to as the P13, pictured - will be called the Sports Series, and that it will make its global debut in the second quarter of 2015.

Like its siblings the 650S and P1, the Sports Series will be built around a carbon fibre central tub, have a mid-mounted V8 engine and take power to the rear wheels.

That engine will likely be based on a version of the 650S' 3.8 litre V8, albeit detuned to a level below that car's 478kW/678Nm output.

The Sports Series will be pitched squarely at Porsche's dominant 911 Turbo, as well as other rivals like the Audi R8 and the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GT. With that in mind, expect a power output somewhere just under 400kW.

Tech details are still under wraps, but expect all to be revealed at the car's official unveiling next year, most likely at the New York Auto Show in April.
