The 'hypercar' end of the supercar market will soon be joined by a new contender from McLaren - codenamed the P12. But that's not all.

According to reports out of the US, there is also another coming to tackle the 'affordable' end of the supercar segment (where the Gallardo and its ilk reside), the P13. The first of this pair, if the reports are correct, we're likely to see as early as 2013.

That McLaren is looking to grow its sports and supercar range beyond its existing MP4-12C solo act is no secret. Now however, with Singaporean billionaire Peter Lim on board as an investor, the company is ready to kick its new model plans into action.

McLaren's Managing Director Antony Sheriff has declared class-leading power and performance for every new model. With a $1 billion development-spend already promised, the company looks ready to back up Sheriff's claims.

For now, the existing MP4-12C is understood to represent the mid-range offering in the future McLaren line-up.

While it squares off against the likes of the Ferrari 458, new entry- and top-shelf offerings will challenge the California and the Prancing Horse's replacement for the Enzo, and Lamborghini's Aventador.

While the MP4-12C was codenamed inside McLaren as the P11, the upcoming halo car - a spiritual successor to the legendary F1 - is reportedly coded the P12.

As with the MP4-12C, the P12 is expected to make extensive use of carbon fibre, including the monocell tub that sits inside the company's current hero.

The new car will go even further however, using carbon fibre for its crash structures and body panels - where the MP4-12C currently uses aluminium.

"Whatever we do will be based on carbon," Sheriff says of the new cars. "It will have performance and handling that's the best of its segment."

Following the P12 and entering the line-up beneath the MP4-12C, will be the P13, with the Ferrari California, Lamborghini Gallardo, Audi R8 and the Porsche 911 Turbo in its sights.

Designed around McLaren's existing monocell tub, the P12 will reportedly debut as soon as 2013, with the P13 scheduled to arrive in the following year.
