McLaren has pulled the covers from its topless supercar, revealing the new 2013 MP4-12C Spider.

As expected, the Spider features a folding metal roof that tucks away into a space behind the rear seats. When the roof is up, the space becomes 52 litres of useable storage room.

McLaren promises performance on par with the hardtop, thanks to a development program that planned for a convertible version from day one.

Weighing just 40kg more than the regular model, and featuring the same twin-turbo 3.8 litre V8 engine, the new Spider lists performance figures almost identical to the hardtop MP4-12C.

"The 12C Spider delivers all the thrills characteristic of a high performance roadster, and yet transforms into a raucous track beast at the flick of a switch," Antony Sheriff, McLaren Automotive Managing Director, said.

"I can’t wait to see it on road and track with customers later this year."

With the engine's full 460kW on tap, McLaren says the Spider will hit 100km/h in 3.1 seconds - a match for the hardtop.

The 0-100mph (161km/h) run comes down in 6.1 seconds - 0.1 short of the coupe - while the sprint to 200km/h is listed at 9.0 seconds, 0.2 short of the coupe.

The quarter-mile (400 metres) sprint is listed at 10.8 seconds, a hair off the regular model's 10.6 second time, and top speed is listed at 329km/h, compared to 333km/h for the coupe.

The MP4-12C Spider is expected to hit Australia toward the end of 2012.
