McLaren will reportedly draw the line at its current 540C and 570S models, as far as making its cars affordable to the masses.

While this could be a blow to buyers hopeful of seeing 'more-affordable' McLarens - like a ‘100C’ or ‘200S’ - it will no doubt be welcome news to existing McLaren customers.

Speaking with the UK’s Autocar, McLaren Chief Designer Robert Melville said the carmaker won’t chase volume sales through a lower entry-level model.

Mr Melville said a direct rival for Porsche’s Cayman was below the level McLaren was aiming for, and that the current rivals for Porsche’s 911 were as cheap as its models will get.

“[A Cayman rival] is a step too far - that is not exclusive enough for us,” Mr Melville said.

“You look at Ferrari. They are coming from very high end. This [the 570S] is stretching us down to R8s and 911s and is as low as we’d want to come.”
