Mazda has recalled four of its passenger models in Australia this week, due to a potential problem with the rear tailgate struts.

The carmaker has identified a weakness with the strut surroundings, which may be susceptible to corrosion - particularly in areas with a higher exposure to salt.

The problem has occurred through the use of an inappropriate type of paint.

Should the surrounds corrode, the strut may eventually break free of the mounting point as the tailgate is opened. In a worst-case scenario, a bystander may be injured if the strut escapes from the pressurised canister.

Affected models are all fitted with tailgate-style boots, including the Mazda3 BL Hatchback, Mazda6 GH Hatchback, Mazda6 GH Wagon and Mazda6 GJ Wagon, along with the CX-3 DK and CX-5 KE SUVs.
