Mazda is coming closer to offering its own electric-vehicle range, with a new Mazda2 EV lease programme kicking off in Japan this year.
The electrified version of the Mazda2 - which is known as the Demio in Japan - will be made available to companies and government departments from October.
The Demio EV is driven by a front-mounted 75kW/150Nm electric motor, sending power to the front wheels - just like the regular conventionally-powered Mazda2.
Energy for the electric motor comes from a 20kWh lithium-ion battery pack, and Mazda promises a driving range of around 200kWh from a single charge.
Mazda says a full charge can be achieved in around eight hours through a 15A power point, and a fast-charge system will recover 80 percent of charge in around 40 minutes.
Australia
An Australian-debut for any all-electric Mazda is likely sometime away, with international sales of regular consumer EVs not expected to begin until around 2018.
Until then, Mazda's Australian arm will focus on rolling out new models built under the carmaker's efficiency-focused SkyActiv platform and drivetrain programme.
