Mazda Australia has recalled a range of models from its past line-up due to a potential problem with the ignition switch.

An excessive amount of grease may have been applied to the ignition parts during manufacturing, and this grease may have carbonised over the years.

As a result, the level of insulation between the ignition parts may be reduced, and heat may build up inside the unit.

Drivers could eventually notice smoke emanating from the unit which could be followed by a fire in extreme cases.

The models in question are sedan, hatch and wagon versions of the 121, 323, 626 and 929 along with the MPV for Mazda, while the Eunos 30X is also being recalled.

Mazda is targeting a specific list of Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) for each model.
