Mazda has reportedly continued with its push to squeeze every ounce of life out of the internal combustion engine with a new patent aimed at both efficiency and performance.

Following on from the carmaker's announcement that it will soon offer a Homogenous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) petrol engine in production models, the next stage appears to be another engine (or the same engine) with twin-turbochargers and an electric supercharger.

Road And Track has unearthed the patent application in the US, which shows how the trio of chargers could work together.

The supercharger would provide a constant boost to power from low RPM, in turn overcoming turbo lag and potentially lowering emissions, while the turbos would kick in at higher RPM.

Powering the supercharger could be a beefier electrical system, for example, 48 volts instead of 12, or Mazda's i-Eloop energy recovery system could also be of use.

Unclear at this stage is whether the technology would be applied to petrol or diesel engines, or both - also, which model(s) Mazda may use to debut the new engine.
