Mazda has previewed a pair of ‘concepts’ based on its MX-5 roadster ahead of their official unveiling at the 2017 Tokyo Auto Salon.

The first is the Custom Style, based on the MX-5 RF but with visual and performance-oriented modifications.

Over the standard RF, the Custom scores a new front spoiler, blackened side skirts and sports exhaust tips.

Performance mods include adjustable suspension and a strut tower brace.

Mazda has looked to the original NA MX-5 that kicked off the fan-favourite model in 1989 with its distinctive red paint for the second concept, called the Classic Red.

As the name suggests, the roadster concept features a red paint finish virtually identical to the original, which was only available in this colour or white in its earliest years. Later, in Australia at least, limited edition models were available in British Racing Green and blue.

Apart from the lick of red paint, the Classic Red is a standard MX-5 roadster.

Mazda refers to the pair as “running pleasure” models. The carmaker will send some of its design and development team to the Mazda stand at the Auto Salon to speak with fans.

The 2017 Tokyo Auto Salon will run from January 13-15 - stay tuned to TMR for more.
