Mazda’s iconic MX-5 sports car turns 25 this year, and the Japanese carmaker has launched a dedicated website to celebrate.
The original NA model debuted at the Chicago Auto Show in February 1989, before going on sale to the Japanese market in September of the same year.
Mazda seized on the success of the first model, releasing a steady stream of limited edition variants between new models over the years.
One such model in Neo Green to span from the original - limited to 300 units and known simply as Limited Edition - was offered to Australian customers with head-height speakers in its tan leather seats, a removable hardtop, and even a jacket for the owner to wear.
After almost ten years, the second generation NB model was launched, now sporting a larger four-cylinder petrol engine, up from 1.6 to 1.8 litres.
The current NC model was launched in 2005 with a 2.0 litre petrol engine, with minor facelifts keeping the model's styling fresh over the last nine years.
Mazda’s dedicated 25th anniversary website contains a statement, thanking fans for their support.
“We would like to thank all our fans from around the world for supporting the MX-5 for the last 25 years. Taking inspiration from the fact the MX-5 has continued to capture people's hearts and transcend countries, cultures and generations, we will continue our pursuit of manufacturing purity and perfection, to share with fans, and look forward to the next 25 years.”
So where to from here for the Mazda MX-5?
The ND model, expected to arrive later this year, was spied testing in September 2013 and may reverse the trend of previous models, by featuring a downsized engine capacity.
The 25th Anniversary website teases the new model with a “coming soon” tab; which at present, is deactivated. The one-million mark beckons for Mazda as well, with MX-5 sales reaching 920,000 at the end of last year.
Mazda released special edition models for the 10th and 20th anniversaries of the MX-5, but whether a 25th Anniversary special edition is on the cards or not is unclear.
