A special new edition of Mazda’s MX-5 is now on sale in Australia, marking the iconic roadster’s 25th birthday.
Today’s local launch of the new 25th Anniversary Edition, based on the current generation, follows the release of a commemorative video in February.
And, with the September 4 unveiling of the all-new next-generation MX-5 already confirmed, this will likely be the last special-edition model in the ‘NC’ range.
Just 40 of the new specials will be offered in Australia - on sale as of 10am this morning - and Mazda’s local arm says it is anticipating a sell-out affair.
In fact, the new model’s counterpart in the US market, where only 100 examples were offered, sold out in just 10 minutes.
Australia’s allotment could go even faster, with 13 of the 40 already reserved ahead of this morning’s launch.
For Australia, the 25th Anniversary Edition MX-5 is priced at $48,380 in six-speed manual form, and $49,990 with the six-speed auto.
As a nod to the roadster’s sports focus, 24 of the limited-edition cars will be produced in manual form, and 16 in auto form.
(Interestingly, Mazda tells us the Australian sales split between manual and automatic models has been exactly 50/50.)
Features include the first-ever availability of the Soul Red metallic paint option - the only colour available with this new special model - matched to black A-pillars, door mirrors and retractable roof.
Interior features includes an off-white leather upholstery and door trim, black leather arm rest, steering wheel and shift knob, and red contrast stitching.
A red finish is applied to the dash’s decoration panel, and there’s also stainless steel scuff plates.
As with the regular MX-5, power in the new special is provided by a 118kW/188Nm 2.0 litre petrol four, with a 0-100km/h time of 7.8 seconds in manual form.
