Mazda will whip the covers off its low-slung, sporty Koeru Concept at next month's Frankfurt Motor Show, with a single teaser sketch released today showing a sleek looking crossover with a five-door hatch bodystyle.

And according to Mazda, the Koeru - named for the Japanese word for "exceed", or "go beyond" - will aim "to exceed existing category standards and stereotypes".

Exactly which standards and stereotypes the Koeru Concept will shatter remains to be seen, but gauging from the proportions in the sketch this is a Mazda3-sized crossover that could sit between the CX-3 and CX-5 - a CX-4, if you will.

Mazda is saving the full details for the Koeru's unveilling on September 15, saying only that it will feature the latest SkyActiv tehcnology to provide driving thrills without compromising on eco-friendliness.

The Koeru's styling adheres to Mazda's current Kodo design language, which currently adorns all models in its line up bar the ageing CX-9.

In Mazda's own words, the company aimed to "impart the Koeru with the power and vitality of a wild animal while maintaining a sense of refined dignity". Have they been successful? We'll find out on September 15 when the wraps come off.
