Sun-seekers with a love for wind-in-the-hair motoring but a need for added security, take note - Mazda is preparing to unveil a folding hardtop equipped MX-5 at the New York Auto Show.

Although not entirely confirmed yet, Mazda has offered a cryptically-worded invite to the motoring press, suggesting its latest release will “blow the lid off at the New York Auto Show.”

The folded paper invite, itself an example of the Japanese art of Kamon-ori, or origami flower folding, offers another less-than-subtle hint at what Mazda's debut might be, with the precisely folded cardboard bloom unfurling to reveal its cryptic message.

While Mazda has remained tight-lipped about the emergence of a hardtop MX-5, Fiat dropped strong hints that its own version of the MX-5, the 124 Spider will feature a hardtop when speaking to TMR at that vehicle’s unveiling last year.

Australia is expected to be in line for the MX-5 Roadster Coupe when it arrives. The previous generation MX-5 offered both soft and hardtop variants over its life cycle, finishing up its model run available only in hardtop.

Like that previous generation model, the new MX-5 is expected to offer a polycarbonate (or similar material) roof shell, with a focus on lightweight construction.

However, the MX-5 Roadster Coupe may not be alone on Mazda’s New York stand, with the spied CX-4 or CX-6 SUV coupe another possibility to make its production debut.

We’ll know more in due course and will keep you up to date on Mazda’s plans as they come to hand.
