Mazda is reportedly planning a new high-riding hatch that will enter the range below its CX-5 SUV, meeting the demands of a crossover-hungry market.

Based on the next-generation Mazda2 light car, the 'CX-3' would take on the likes of the popular Nissan Juke, Ford's coming EcoSport and the Holden Trax.

According to Britain's Auto Express, the new crossover will make its international debut sometime in 2014, although a concept version could appear sooner.

Like the new Mazda6 and the CX-5, the so-called CX-3 would carry Mazda's new 'Kodo' design language, while utilising the full range of SkyActiv engines, transmissions and construction techniques.

As with the next Mazda2, the new model's development focus will be on lightweight materials and efficient powertrains to battle the ultra-low fuel figures of the latest models in the light-car market.

It has also been reported in recent months that Mazda is preparing a 1.3 litre turbocharged engine for the Mazda2, and this mill could also appear in the CX-3.

If these reports are accurate, watch for a suitably sleek concept to appear in the next year (with a more production-friendly version to follow).
