Mazda Australia has revealed new details for its upcoming 2012 BT-50, this time offering a look at which engines will power the new utility.

Headlining the range will be a 3.2 litre five-cylinder turbodiesel engine producing 147kW and 470Nm of torque, mirroring the figures of its platform stablemate, the new 2012 Ford Ranger.

The 3.2 litre 'MZ-CD' diesel engine's power figures represent a 24 percent increase in torque and a 28 percent increase in output over the 3.0 litre engine powering the current BT-50.

Fuel consumption for the new engine has yet to be announced, but Mazda says we can expect better figures than the outgoing engine, thanks in large part to the new high-pressure fuel system and advanced turbo-charging technologies.

Also shared with the 2012 Ranger is a new 2.2 litre turbodiesel engine, producing 110kW and 375Nm of torque - making for a 14 percent increase in torque and a 5 percent power increase over the existing 2.5 litre diesel.

"Utility buyers demand performance from their vehicle and there’s no doubt that the All-New BT-50’s new range of advanced diesel engines will provide just that," Mazda Australia's Alastair Doak said.

"Not only will these engines make for a more refined and responsive driving experience but customers will really notice the benefit during common scenarios such as towing or driving with heavy loads."

Both new powertrains have been developed with a focus on towing capabilities: in either manual or automatic transmission, Mazda says the 3.2 litre engine will be capable of towing up to 3350kg, delivering a 350kg increase over the current model.

The 2.2 litre engine offers a similar improvement, towing a maximum of 2500kg - an increase of 250kg over the larger outgoing engine.

The all-new 2012 Mazda BT-50 will arrive in Australian showrooms later this year.
