Ford and Mazda have issued recalls for their respective dual-cab pickups this week, due to a potential problem with a rear seat mechanism.

The folding rear seatback contains a latch with a return spring, and it’s this spring that may be susceptible to failure.

Should the spring break, Ford and Mazda both report that owners may hear an unusual sound.

A broken spring may render the seat latch inoperable, meaning the seatback could potentially fall forward during normal driving, or during a collision. In either instance, there is a risk of injury to vehicle occupants.

The pair also note that an inoperable rear seat securing mechanism may prevent a user from correctly fitting a child restraint.
