Today Mazda has announced that it will display a new sports car concept at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show.

With just a single dark teaser image to whet the appetite of enthusiasts, the new sports car concept is said to reflect Mazda’s unique approach to driving pleasure.

For fans of Mazda’s rotary engine, this is a promising sign that the new concept could feature a development of the Wankel engine, last seen in the RX-8 four-door coupe.

Expected to return to a two-door coupe format, the new coupe could signal a return of the iconic RX-7, which went out of production in 2002

The new sports car concept will also share space on the Mazda stand with a 1967 Cosmo 110S, Mazda’s first rotary engined sports car, as well as the first Japanese showing of the Koeru SUV concept first shown at Frankfurt.

“Designers strove to condense the company’s sports car history to as great a degree as possible into this concept” Mazda said in a statement.

Further bolstering the sports car message, Mazda will also display two racing racing-spec MX-5s.

As for further details on Mazda’s new sports car, its platform, and its powertrain, we’ll bring you all the info as it comes to hand in the lead-up to the Tokyo Motor Show, which opens on the 30th of October.
