Talk of an expanding relationship between Mazda and Fiat continues, with news the two carmakers are in ongoing discussions on potential ventures.

Speaking with Autonews Europe at the LA Auto Show, Mazda CEO Takashi Yamanouchi reportedly suggested the two companies are working on an “opportunity list” beyond the upcoming MX-5/Alfa Romeo roadster platform sharing arrangement.

"The engineers at both companies are meeting with each other, and we can have a mutual better understanding of each company, which can then open up new possibilities", Yamanouchi said.

This follows reports from the Paris Motor Show in September, where Yamanouchi’s interest was echoed by Chrysler-Fiat boss Sergio Marchionne.

“Everything is possible, we’ve just started. We’re open to any solutions that lessen capital (expenditure)”, Marchionne said at the time.

However, Yamanouchi said that it remans unclear if utilising Fiat's underutilised European plants would be a viable path.

"It's a matter of production volume. But it also involves double tooling, so I don't know if it's something that would be viable or not." Yamanouchi said.

This latest report also suggests that an equity partnership is unlikely between the two parties, contrasting earlier reports of Mazda’s interest in such a venture if Ford divests its remaining 2.11 percent share in the Japanese manufacturer.
