New details of Maserati's upcoming GranSport coupe have come to light this week, with new reports out of the US pointing to a Ghibli connection.

According to website Motor Trend, Maserati boss Harald Wester has reportedly hinted at the source of the new model's underpinnings, highlighting the Ghibli and the new Quattroporte.

The report adds that the new platform, which would be shortened for the GranSport, could also underpin the next GranTurismo, while the next GranCabrio would be based on the smaller of the two coupes.

Official details on the GranSport are thin on the ground, although early talk of sharing the midengined platform of the Alfa Romeo 4C - which will be built by Maserati - has at least been nixed.

It is known that the smaller new coupe will be lighter and more dynamic than its larger stablemates, and Maserati is understood to have singled out the 911 and F-Type as benchmarks.

The Gransport is expected to draw power from the same 300kW twin-turbo 3.0 litre V6 available with the Ghibli and new Quattroporte, which is produced by Ferrari.

The new model is expected to debut sometime in 2015.
