Maserati’s rival for the Porsche 911 could use a Ferrari-developed twin-turbo V6, according to a new report.
British magazine AutoExpress report that the new engine is being developed in both naturally-aspirated and turbo form for use also in the upcoming new Quattroporte, planned smaller saloon, and the Kubang SUV.
Previous reports have pointed toward the performance flagship using a version of the current GranTurismo MC Stradale’s 331kW 4.7 litre V8, though a theoretically more efficient forced-induction V6 is plausible.
Still yet to be confirmed for production, the model is expected to reintroduce the ‘GranSport’ badge, and be based on the upcoming Alfa Romeo 4C’s composite chassis.
The two-seat, mid-engined platform is likely to be enlarged for the bigger-engined Maserati version, though the target weight is said to be a relatively lithe 1200kg.
Maserati CEO Harald Wester is understood to be eyeing the 911 as a direct rival, with ambitions to defeat the German hero on price and performance.
If given the green light, the ‘GranSport’ is not expected to reach production until 2015, after the launch of Quattroporte and Kubang models.
