Rumours of a Jeep Grand Cherokee-based Maserati SUV have previously pointed to the potential for Ferrari-supplied V8 and V12 powerplants.

According to CNN in the US, even Fiat and Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne has previously confirmed a prancing stallion under the hood.

This week, however, new reports out of the UK suggest the big Maserati will be more a rebodied Grand Cherokee, using both its platform and a version of the upcoming Grand Cherokee SRT8's V8 engine.

A Fiat-sourced diesel is also expected - likely the same 3.0 litre diesel V6 that is now offered with the big Jeep.

If these latest reports prove true, Maserati's first-ever SUV could be driven by American and Italian engines, while riding on a platform developed jointly by Chrysler and Mercedes-Benz - thanks to the Grand Cherokee's pre-breakup DaimlerChrysler genesis.

While just 'a report', there may be precedent in the latest rumours: earlier this year, it was reported that Maserati's new entry-level saloon could also be 'little more' than a rebodied Chrysler 300, sharing both the platform and engine of the big American.

What is next to come from Maserati? For now, the Fiat-owned brand has yet to offer any word on either a new sub-Quattroporte sedan or an SUV - and only time will tell.
