For its part, the carmaker has not confirmed the shrouded sedan is the new Ghibli, although its release for the event specifies an all-new model.
It is unclear however if the car bound for Shanghai will be a final production model or a thinly veiled concept, although the Ghibli is expected to hit showrooms later this year.
"A truly exciting discovery awaits you: the worldwide presentation of our newest model. Be the first to experience a stunning car, which will leave you breathless, confirming both the incomparable heritage of Maserati as well as its extraordinary future," Maserati says of the car's unveiling.
It is also clear that the covered sedan wears a difference face to the 'leaked' images uncovered last month. Here we see a pronounced snout, with back-set headlights reminiscent of the outgoing Quattroporte sedan.
Using a shrunken take on the Quattroporte’s platform, the Ghibli is likely to feature versions of the larger sedan’s new twin-turbocharged 3.0 litre V6 and 3.8 litre V8.
All Ghibli variants are expected to use the eight-speed ZF auto found in the Quattroporte, and an all-wheel drive option is likely to appear.
