Maserati has reportedly trademarked "Cinqueporte" - Italian for 'five doors' - sparking rumours that it will be the production name for the company's recently-revealed Kubang concept SUV.

The nameplate could potentially be used for another (as yet unknown) model such as a hatchback or shooting brake, but the most likely recipient of the Cinqueporte badge is the Kubang.

The Kubang was revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, and is built atop the same platform that underpins the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Mercedes-Benz M-Class.

The eventual production version of the Cinqueporte/Kubang will be powered by a range of "high tech proprietary engines" designed by Maserati and built by Ferrari, and it would not be unreasonable to expect a V8 among them.

An eight-speed automatic transmission will also be developed exclusively for the Kubang, Maserati says

The production car will have the Porsche Cayenne squarely in its sights, as well as the BMW X5, Mercedes ML and Infiniti FX.

A production date has yet to be finalised, however Maserati's new SUV is expected to hit showrooms sometime after 2013.
