Maserati CEO Harald Wester continues to spruik his desire to produce a 911 competitor, recent reports out of the UK suggest.

The brand is yet to confirm the model will reach production, but speaking with British magazine EVO this week, Wester was not shy about sharing his ambitions for the model’s specifications and pricing.

According to the report, Wester’s intention is for the model to become Maserati’s halo sports car, outpacing the upcoming new Quattroporte, planned smaller saloon, and the production version of the Kubang concept SUV.

As speculated previously, the model could reintroduce the GranSport badge, with Wester reportedly already referring to the model as ‘the new GranSport’.

“Imagine having something like the Alfa Romeo 4C but for Maserati," Wester told EVO.

"It would have a carbon fibre monocoque and a mid-engined layout, just like the Alfa 4C, as this gives the stylists the most freedom to design something really stunning,” said Wester, who also heads Alfa Romeo.

Wester also reportedly suggested that the car would use the 331kW 4.7 litre V8 engine from the current GranTurismo MC Stradale, which would dictate a larger overall size than Alfa’s upcoming 4C.

"I want this car to be better to drive than a 911 Turbo, but I also want it to cost less,” added Wester.

With the the steel-chassied current ‘997’ series II 911 Turbo starts at AU$363,700, Wester’s target is very ambitious, considering his desire to use more expensive composite construction.
