GM's Chevrolet arm is reportedly working on a facelift for its midsized Malibu sedan, just months on from its US market sales debut.

Industry paper Automotive News reports that soft sales figures have moved the carmaker to begin work on a makeover, which it expects to reveal late in 2013.

Speaking with the paper, GM CEO Dan Akerson said that the medium family car market is a "tough segment", but one in which the carmaker needs to achieve success.

"We are going to do a midcycle enhancement, not dramatic, by this time next year," Akerson said. "I think it's a good car. It'll do OK."
