GM's Chevrolet arm is reportedly working on a facelift for its midsized Malibu sedan, just months on from its US market sales debut.

Industry paper Automotive News reports that soft sales figures have moved the carmaker to begin work on a makeover, which it expects to reveal late in 2013.

Speaking with the paper, GM CEO Dan Akerson said that the medium family car market is a "tough segment", but one in which the carmaker needs to achieve success.

"We are going to do a midcycle enhancement, not dramatic, by this time next year," Akerson said. "I think it's a good car. It'll do OK."

Akerson added that the update will include a new front fascia - likely a new bumper and grille - but did not offer specific details.

New models in the Chevrolet range have seen the carmaker move away from the split-grille design featured on the Colorado and Barina (among others).

The new US-market Chevrolet Impala features a more defined upper grille, and with the recent unveiling of the carmaker's new NASCAR racer, it is clear the SS sedan (Holden VF Commodore for Australia) will take a similar tack.

The Malibu won't make its Australian debut until the second quarter of 2013, but Holden has already revealed the local look of its new midsizer.

One clear point of difference in the Holden-badged model is the grille, which borrows more from the Australian Cruze small car rather than the split design of the American version.

With that change already in place, it remains to be seen if the planned update will come to Australia - but if it does, a late 2014 introduction is more likely.

GM is not the first to rush a makeover to market; Honda's still-new Civic sedan has picked up a refresh for the US, just 18 months on from its debut there.
