Mahindra has revealed that it is developing a range of new petrol engines and platforms with its latest acquision, Korean carmaker SsangYong.

The news follows the unveiling this week of Mahindra's new XUV500, which the Indian carmaker developed in-house, separate from SsangYong's operations.

New small petrol engines will join Mahindra's existing diesel options, including 1.0 and 1.2 litre options. A larger petrol engine will also be developed by SsangYong for both carmakers.

The introduction of new petrol engines should also see SsangYong drop its "We Live Diesels" slogan.

Together, the two brands are working on three new platforms, with the first expected to be completed in the near future.

“Work on a new platform should be concluded very soon, this will be on the compact side," A Mahindra spokesperson said this week.

"Right now it's in the styling and customer research stage and still has to clear the business case, to see if it's commercially viable. This will spawn products for both Mahindra and Ssangyong."

It is unclear which segment the carmakers will target with the other new platforms. With a 60 percent share of India's larger utility vehicles space belonging to Mahindra, a range of new small offerings is likely.

SsangYong too will need to flesh out its range with small and light cars, with the bulk of its international line-up consisting of SUVs, a pair of luxury models and a number of commercial vehicles.
