It’s a nearly prophetic end to a legendary Falcon and the beginning of an insane new adventure as the first trailer for Mad Max: Fury Road hits the net today.
This first preview (see bottom of article), revealed at the San Diego Comic-Con in the US, has been a long time coming.
In fact, we last wrote about the fourth Mad Max installment in 2009, when details of the reborn franchise first surfaced online.
Fury Road stars Tom Hardy in the role of ‘Mad’ Max Rockatansky, made famous by Mel Gibson in 1979, alongside Charlize Theron and Zoe Kravitz, daughter of American rocker Lenny Kravitz.
Full details for the new film are still to come, although it is understood that the story will continue on from the events of the third film, Beyond Thunderdome.
(However, the presence of Max's Interceptor, destroyed in the second film, does raise a question or five...)
“The film is set in the furthest reaches of our planet, in a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken and everyone is crazed fighting for the necessities of life,” the film’s promotional material reads.
Max is again portrayed as a man of few words, desperately seeking peace of mind after the loss of his wife and child in the first film.
Opposite Max is Theron’s character, the ‘Imperator’ Furiosa, “a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland.”
Importantly, this fourth movie is again directed by franchise mastermind George Miller, after sharing the job with fellow Aussie director George Ogilvie on Beyond Thunderdome.
(The death of Thunderdome producer Byron Kennedy during location scouting initially moved Miller to leave the third film’s development, only returning later to direct the film’s action sequences.)
Mad Max: Fury Road is slated to hit cinemas on May 15, 2015.
