American outfit Local Motors - known at TMR for its specially-designed pizza delivery rig - has been crowd-sourcing the development of a lightweight sports car.

Now, the project’s contributors have voted on a winning design and production is expected to begin in the coming months.

The new racer, reminiscent in design of a motorcycle, is called SF-01 - the ‘SF’ meaning ‘Street Fighter’, a common term for modified and stripped-down motorbikes.

The SF-01 boasts a thin layer of body cladding partially covering a long tubular frame. The lower half of the car is bare, with only the top part covered by a slim skin stretched over the four wheels.

Local Motos says the light clothing contributes to an estimated weight of just 725kg.
