Lexus Australia will improve the safety credentials of the bulk of its model range later this year, with the Japanese luxury marque set to introduce Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA) on many of its offerings.

The NX SUV and RC coupe will be the first recipients when they launch later this year, while IS, GS, ES and LS models already equipped with blind sport monitoring will also receive RCTA by the end of 2014.

However, precisely which variants of the NX and RC will receive RCTA has yet to be confirmed.

If the IS model structure is any guide, though, it may only come standard on F Sport grades and above.

What is RCTA, exactly? By using the car's mid-range proximity sensors in the rear bumper, the car is capable of detecting street traffic approaching the car in either direction and alerting the driver.
