With the NX mid-sized crossover now allowing Lexus to compete on an even footing with the Audi Q5 and BMW X3, industry speculation is now focused on whether the Japanese luxury brand will develop an even smaller SUV.
And there's certainly room to move below the NX's size class, with competitors like the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLA already established players in the small luxury SUV segment.
But will it happen? Nothing has been confirmed, but Lexus' Europe Vice President Alain Uyttenhoven says it's certianly not outside the realm of possibility, telling UK mag Autocar that a small Lexus SUV "made sense", and is "not impossible".
Uyttenhoven also said that tastes in the European, Japanese and Chinese markets - which traditionally favour smaller vehicles - would be the catalyst for further development of downsized models, and allow Lexus to diversify its product portfolio.
But while smaller Lexuses may be on the horizon, the top end of the Lexus stable won't be getting any smaller anytime soon.
Uyttenhoven ruled out a four-cylinder powerplant for the LS flagship sedan, saying a fuel-cell option would be a more suitable option once the technology reaches maturity.
